Certification of SAF – Guaranteed Quality and Verified Reductions

Oslo

Many companies want to cut emissions, but often face uncertainty: How can we be sure that the actions we pay for actually deliver results? Certification offers clarity and trust. Independent verification and full traceability ensure that emission reductions are recognized and can be credibly reported in corporate climate accounts.

Why Certification Matters

Certification ensures that every step – from raw materials to final delivery – is documented, sustainable, and aligned with international standards. It gives you the confidence that your investment is driving real climate impact.

AFSN's SAF – Certified and Verifiable

All SAF supplied by AFSN is certified under internationally recognized schemes:

  • ISCC (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification)
  • RSB (Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials)
This means that the feedstocks we use (European waste products like used cooking and tall oil) are traceable throughout the entire value chain. The certifications confirm that the SAF meets strict sustainability requirements – including the use of waste- and residue-based feedstocks rather than crops for food, full traceability across the value chain, and compliance with EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) criteria – and that it delivers verifiable life-cycle emission reductions.

A Rigorous Certification Process

Certification is more than paperwork – it ensures that every step in the value chain is accurate, transparent, and trustworthy. Annual independent audits are carried out to confirm that:

  • Double counting is prevented – our fuel balance (the volumes of SAF purchased, stored, and delivered) is verified so that each reduction is only counted once.
  • Fuel quality and compliance are safeguarded – our airport storage tanks are inspected to ensure that handling and blending of SAF meet all technical and safety standards.
  • Integrity of the supply chain is maintained – the full logistics chain, from procurement and transport to airport delivery, is reviewed to guarantee traceability and compliance at every stage.
In addition, the certification schemes we use are approved by the Norwegian Environment Agency. This means that emission reductions are officially recognized by Norwegian authorities.

What It Means for You

When your company purchases SAF from AFSN, you can be confident that:

  • Emission reductions are real and additional – volumes supplied are above mandated blending levels, creating climate benefits beyond what the SAF mandate already requires.
  • Accounting aligns with international frameworks
    • SAF purchases can be reported under Scope 3 emissions – including Categories 3, 4 and 6 – in accordance with the principles of the GHG Protocol and the World Economic Forum (WEF) guidelines for the accounting and reporting of SAF certificates.
    • SAF CERs can also be recognized toward science-based climate targets (SBTi), provided they meet defined criteria and are transparently documented.
  • Documentation is robust and verifiable – all deliveries are backed by independent certification (ISCC/RSB) and accepted by the Norwegian Environment Agency, ensuring reductions are recognized in both corporate reporting and by regulators.

A Secure Investment in the Future

Certification gives companies the assurance they need to make sound, sustainable choices. With AFSN's certified SAF, you can be confident that the reductions you report are real, measurable, and fully aligned with the most stringent international standards.
